The Void
I stare into the Void. The Void stares back
And voiceless speaks its truth to me; each word
A paralysing arrow; for I heard
The ghostly sound of emptiness, the lack
Of simple human feeling. Just a mind
All self-consuming, ripped by pois’nous thought
That ev’rything humanity has wrought
Is out of reach; ’twould neither seek nor find.
The simple joys that people daily share
It doth observe, but coldly, from afar;
No fellow-smile its empty face doth mar;
No understanding breaks its glassy stare.
Itself it knows too well. For now I see
That dismal heartless Void is only…me.
